What this site is and how it is filed
O2Zone is an independent guide to travelling in France, written in English, organised along one axis instead of a region menu.
Most guides to France are arranged by administrative region, which is a filing system invented for tax collection rather than travel. We file by solitude instead: how alone you will be when you get there, from ten — where a queue is part of the visit — down to zero, where there is no attraction at all and the road is the entry.
The axis is not a mood. It follows a documented feature: the diagonale du vide (the empty diagonal), a band of chronically low population density running roughly from the Ardennes in the north-east to the foothills of the Pyrenees in the south-west. More than a third of the country's surface falls inside it. Almost nobody lives there, and almost nobody visits.
How we file a place
The number is editorial judgement, not a measurement, and it describes the experience of arriving rather than the census. A famous abbey in February and the same abbey in August are not the same number, so where the season changes the answer we say so in the piece.
- 10 to 8 — you will queue, and the visit has to be planned around other people.
- 7 to 5 — busy, but ten minutes of walking gets you out of it; or a working town going about its day.
- 4 to 2 — you will meet a few people and no crowd. Fuel and food are where the villages are.
- 1 and 0 — you will pass a car occasionally. Plan around distance rather than around the clock.
What you will not find here
No prices, opening hours, timetables or event dates — all of it expires, and a wrong closing day sends someone across a département for nothing. No booking service, no affiliate widgets, no ranked hotel lists. No invented facts: where we are unsure about a specific business we describe the kind of place instead of asserting something about it.
We also do not draw maps by hand. Every map on the site is rendered from real projected geometry at true coordinates.
Who pays for it
Partners underwrite the reporting and are named on the homepage. They have no editorial say, nothing on this site can be bought, and no piece is written or filed differently because of them.
